Across Europe, between 5000 and 8000 people face rare, chronically disabling or life-threatening disorders. One example is a disease that deteriorates both the optic nerve and the spinal cord – potentially causing vision loss, paralysis, loss of bowel and bladder control, and muscle weakness.
