Empowering Patients on World AIDS Day: The Vital Role of Blood Health

On December 1, World AIDS Day, we honor the progress made in fighting HIV/AIDS and renew our commitment to those still affected.

Last year, an estimated 1.3 million people contracted HIV and 630,000 died from HIV-related causes. While there is no cure, access to preventative tests, screening measures and proper treatment can help patients manage living with HIV/AIDS.

For many patients, including those with HIV/AIDS, blood health is critical. That’s why on #WorldAIDSDay2024, the Global Alliance for Patient Access (GAfPA) emphasizes this essential aspect of health by advocating for comprehensive blood management.

Blood Health

Blood health is integral to overall wellness. But anemia often accompanies those with chronic conditions like HIV/AIDS, cancer and autoimmune diseases. Anemia, a deficiency in red blood cells, affects around 2 billion people globally, significantly impacting physical strength, cognitive function and quality of life. For those with HIV/AIDS, anemia is a frequent and challenging complication, heightening the need for patient-centered blood health strategies.

Patient Blood Management

In response, GAfPA promotes Patient Blood Management (PBM), a holistic approach that prioritizes patients’ unique blood health needs. This method emphasizes monitoring blood levels, minimizing blood loss during medical treatments and reducing dependency on transfusions where possible. PBM offers a framework for healthcare providers to better manage blood health, creating pathways for safer, more effective patient care.

A Call for Awareness and Action

GAfPA calls on policymakers, healthcare providers and advocates to join in raising awareness about the importance of blood health on World AIDS Day. Through collaborative efforts, we can improve clinical practices, empower patients to manage their health proactively and reduce the burdens associated with anemia and other blood health challenges.

By safeguarding blood health, we take a vital step toward supporting the lives and well-being of millions worldwide, especially those navigating the complexities of chronic diseases like HIV/AIDS.
