Make the Change for Kidney Health

Chronic kidney disease – CKD – poses a growing burden across the globe. CKD affects more than 10% of the world’s population, or approximately 850 million people, and is projected to be the world’s fifth leading cause of death by 2040. Yet it’s not considered a priority among non-communicable diseases.

Now, a new awareness campaign aims to change all that.

The campaign, co-created by the Global Patient Alliance for Kidney Health and AstraZeneca, calls for policymakers to Make the Change for Kidney Health.

Taking action on kidney health can deliver five key benefits:

  1. Transform lives for patients and populations: Prioritizing kidney health can help improve quality of life, reduce the number of patients on dialysis and lower mortality rates.
  2. Improve health care system resilience: Catching and treating CKD in its early stages saves costs and preserves health systems’ resources, allowing investment to be redirected to other areas of need.
  3. Ease the burden on caregivers: The chronic nature of CKD leads to long-term care needs. Improving kidney health lifts the emotional and logistical burden for caregivers.
  4. Increase productivity to support economies: Earlier diagnosis and more effective treatment of CKD can reduce patient and caregiver absenteeism, increase workforce participation and promote long-term productivity and economic growth.
  5. Secure a more sustainable future: Reducing the need for dialysis lowers the environmental impact of CKD by reducing the need for fresh water, electricity, carbon emissions and healthcare waste.

Governments and policymakers must elevate chronic kidney disease as an urgent global health priority to support early diagnosis and treatment. Action is needed now to bring the best possible outcomes for patients, health systems, caregivers, the economy and the planet.
